King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer.

In a statement released last week, Buckingham Palace revealed the diagnosis and announced the King had begun treatment for the disease.

The news comes after Charles was released from hospital, where he was treated for prostate enlargement.

Though the type of cancer has not been specified, the Palace has confirmed Charles does not have prostate cancer.

“During the King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted,” read the Buckingham Palace statement.

“Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.”

A “Whole Country” Behind Him

It is understood the King learnt of his condition earlier this month.

UK newspaper The Times reported that Charles had personally shared the news with his two sons, Princes William and Harry. He also previously told his siblings, the Princess Royal Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wished the King a speedy recovery.

“I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time, and I know the whole country will be wishing him well,” he said.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also wished the King well.

“I will be sending a message to the Palace this morning and we hope that King Charles has a speedy recovery and a return to his duties as soon as possible,” he said.

William steps up, Harry Flies Over

According to Buckingham Palace, Charles will continue some of those duties as he receives treatment.

“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” the Palace said.

The Times reported that Prince William will be stepping in to take on the King’s more demanding commitments.

The Prince of Wales has been taking time off to support his wife, Princess Catherine, who is recovering from planned abdominal surgery.

But before the Palace reported the King’s cancer diagnosis, it announced that William will be returning to public duties this week.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry is reportedly preparing to fly to London to visit his father.

His wife Meghan is expected to remain at their home in California with the couple’s children, Archie and Lilibet.

“Grateful”

Charles has moved from his country residence Sandringham House to London while he undergoes treatment.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure,” read the Buckingham Palace statement.

“He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”
