It’s easy to get swept up in the thrill of pre-Christmas sales, but it’s so important to also be thinking about ethics when we shop.

But where do we find this information? How do we make ethical consumption a part of our daily routine?

Baptist World Aid’s Australian Ethical Consumer Report for 2023 provides a comprehensive look at the Australian consumer landscape – revealing just how much shoppers think about modern slavery, sustainability and ethical fashion. National Engagement Manager Sarah Knop joined Hope Drive to discuss the report highlights, areas of improvement and how we should be approaching shopping as Christians.

Key findings

  • 70% of Australians want their shopping habits to reflect ethical practices over the next year —a decrease from 87% in 2021.
  • 80% of Australians have heard of modern slavery and 75% agree that their purchasing habits can make a difference in eradicating it.
  • 51% of Australians are familiar with the term ethical fashion – an increase from 2021.

Tips for consumers

  • Buy secondhand or borrow from a friend.
  • Read about modern slavery and how you can help eradicate it from Be Slavery Free.
  • Read the Ethical Fashion Guide to see how your favourite brands perform in sustainability and supply chain issues.
  • Email your favourite brands using the Speak Out to Brands tool to find out more information about their sustainability practices.
